My absolutely most favorite feature of my 2002 Nissan Pathfinder is the front driver and passenger auto power windows. They auto up and auto down. Very convenient.

Needless to say, I found it baffling one day when the passenger window would bounce down about 6 inches when auto up was used. I had to sneak up on the window with little short ups to get it fully closed.

Passenger side armrest. Click to enlarge.

Why It Happens

The fully up position location is out of whack. This is sometimes caused by an accident or it just may happen on its own. The window doesn’t think it is in the fully upright position and activates its clutching mechanism that pulls the window back down in case your dog or child engaged the auto up with their head out the window. Nice safety feature.

How to Fix It

Pop off the armrest cover that holds the switches. Use a screw driver with a rag wrapped over the tip to pry up the cover along its lower edge. Loosen it in a few spots along the edge and it will pop up. Leave the wires intact.

Window reset button. Click to enlarge.

Find the reset button on the inside of the door. There will be a little hole in the vapor barrier where it is located.

Start with the window in the up position. Hold the reset button down and roll the window all the way down without using the auto feature.

Let go of the reset button and roll the window all the way up again without using the auto feature.

Test the auto feature. If it still bounces, start over. It may take a few tries but, believe me, it works.

For future reference, you can pick up a Haynes manual for 1996-2004 Pathfinders to keep your Pathy and your wallet happy for years to come.

Those of you that woot are intimately familiar with the Bag of Crap. It is the holy grail of wooting; won by few, sought by all. Known to bring down the mightiest of servers, a Bag of Crap is the last thing a wooter does before dying. Two weeks ago I won my very first Bag of Crap. It arrived in the mail today…

I was able to score only one Bag of Crap. Faster fingers and some prior planning may have gotten me two or three, but who’s complaining? I got me some crap.

And, oh what crap it is. The box arrived with two items inside. One in a box, one not.

What’s Inside

The first item was a Mossimo Gift Bag. It contained:

two Cosmyl Spa Lavender English Bath Cubes 1.5 oz

Mossimo Curl Spray 2oz

L.A. Looks Wet Look Styling Gel 1 oz

Nat Robbins Mechanical Eye Liner Silver 0.01 oz

Decorative Carrying Case

After such an extraordinary item right off the bat, I couldn’t imagine what is in the other small box. I was hoping that it was a keyboard since the box was keyboard-sized and shaped. Instead I found a Go Duster; batteries not included. Never heard of it. At least I had heard of Mossimo and L.A. Looks.

I could hardly contain myself.

Does it Blend?

I put the Go Duster together, put some batteries in it (4 AA), and gave it a whirl. Check it out in action below. The Mossimo bath stuff will have to wait. I’m just not in the lavender bath cube mood at the moment…

I can honestly say I got what I ordered. Crap. Thanks woot.

For Pathfinder window bounce down when auto up or rolling up, check the Pathfinder Auto Window Bounce Down Craziness post.

Driver side (highlighted red) – wire/bolt removed. Click to enlarge.

I love my 2002 Pathfinder, but hate the SES (service engine soon AKA check engine) light. It would be easier to figure out Stonehenge than to get this light to shut off. It should not be that difficult with a vehicle. Personally I think the SES and check engine lights on modern vehicles are deliberately vague, purposely preventing the average shade tree mechanic from making repairs. Conspiracy theories aside, here is what I did to fix my Pathy.

Why It Happens

The P1145 and P1140 code my Pathy were throwing indicated that the cam sensors on both the driver side (P1145) and passenger side (P1140) were malfunctioning. They are known to get gummed up, and often do it around the same time. If you have one code, it is in your best interest to change both.

To troubleshoot the issue, and you are throwing only one code or the other, you can switch the sensors and see if the code switches. For example, if you are throwing a P1145, switch the sensors, clear the code, and recheck the code when the SES light comes on again. If you get a P1140 after switching, then the sensor is bad. If you get the same code, you have a bad solenoid. But, if you hit the jackpot like I did with both codes (I actually started off with P1145 and by the time I got around to fixing it 2 months later, the other sensor died giving me the P1140 matching pair), switching them will not change a thing.

Passenger side (highlighted red) – wire removed. Click to enlarge.

How to Fix It

The replacement sensor should cost around $75 (as of the date of this post) from the dealer. You can also find it online for less, but you will have to wait for it. Up to you. Currently, it is part number 23731-2Y52A. It is the same part for both sides. There are other sensors on the engine, so be careful not to confuse them.

Both sensors are held in place with 10mm bolts that can be the victim of corrosion. Be careful with these bolts. My passenger side sensor’s bolt rounded off immediately. I bought a set of Irwin Bolt-Grips and got it off no problem. I did, however, have to replace the bolt. The Bolt-Grips did not destroy the bolt, it was just too rounded to put back in. Also, both sensors will have a little of oil on them; that is normal.

The wire can be stubborn as well. Again, exercise caution. Resist the urge to yank on the wire itself. There is a tab on top that should be depressed while you grip the clip that plugs into the sensor. If you are having trouble unplugging the wire, try using a small screwdriver to press down on the tab while you pull back on the clip. Always grip the clip itself, not the wires.

Replacement Part. Click to enlarge.

The driver side sensor is on top of the engine and, IMHO, the easiest to remove. Start by removing the plastic cover on the top of the engine. Set it and its bolts aside. Do not mix up the bolts with the sensor bolt. The engine exerts pressure on the sensor from the inside. If you use the wrong bolt to reattach it to the engine, it can come flying out of there. You will need to unplug a few of the wires above the sensor, but after that getting a wrench on it is cake. Wiggle it up and out; it has an o-ring gasket on it that seals it in place.

The passenger side is toward the front of the engine and is best reached by removing the battery first. It is jammed up in there at an angle which makes it difficult unless the battery is gone. As with the other, you will have to wiggle it a little to get it to come on out.

Once the sensor(s) are replaced, you can reset the SES light or just wait until it goes through a complete drive cycle and resets itself. A complete drive cycle requires the engine to get up to a certain temp for a certain period of time for the computer to take all its readings. Your personal driving habits will have a factor in how long that will take. Realistically, it should only be a few days of normal driving.

Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.) The next three digits follow in turn in the same fashion except with faster blinks (0.3 second) and a 1.0-second pause between digits.

The ECM code repeats itself until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position, at which point the ECM resets to standard get-in-and-drive-the-car mode. If you get four blinks of ten (0000), the ECM is indicating no malfunction.

You can clear the code (and the annoying MIL) by holding down the accelerator pedal for more than 10 seconds while in Diagnostic Test Mode II. When you release the pedal, the ECM erases the trouble code(s).

Every now and then my faith in humanity is restored. Take what I witnessed last week:

Just as I was beginning to pump gas at a local convenience store, a sedan pulled slowly, and uncomfortably close, around my vehicle. So close that I watched him pull around to make sure he didn’t take out my left rear view. Excited chatter at the convenience store diverted my attention, and there I saw three people pointing at the slow mover. One person was on her mobile so I called over, “What’d he do?” A guy yelled back, “He’s drunk. He can barely walk. He fell over the trash cans and stumbled into his car.” They got a description of the car and the tag number. The girl was on the phone with the police. Within minutes a squad car appeared at the corner, paused for a moment, then roared down the road after this guy.

Drunk driving is not going to disappear. But wouldn’t we all be a little safer if more people acted as those concerned citizens did? They were not in danger yet they acted to save a family or two some misery.

The metric system was devised to provide a uniform standard of measurement worldwide. It is based on the decimal system rather than fractions. The International System of Units, established by the Treaty of Meter (1875), provides the base units of the metric system. The United States is a charter member of this international organization having signed the treaty in 1875. Why, then, is the US the only major industrialized nation to not have adopted the metric system?

Because of the conversion process!

Quick – How many liters in a gallon?

3.78 L

How many people do you know have an aversion to math? Really, it’s not a math problem. It’s a paradigm shift; one that we should jump at. For instance, wouldn’t you rather say:

I weigh 68kg.

I ran 10km before breakfast.

I was doing 100km/hour the whole way here.

Let’s face it, most average Americans will have no clue how much you weigh, how far you ran, or how fast you were going. You see, it’s not a math problem at all. Money is a case in point. It’s already metric. And nobody likes fractions anyway. Don’t do the math. Change the way you think. In reality, doing the math is harder than changing how you quantify speed, volume, weight, and distance.

Top 10 reasons we should convert to the Metric System by Paul Cox:

10. People will finally understand my joke about driving attoparsecs per nanocenturies.

9. Gas will seem cheaper at 50 cents a liter.

8. Being 22 kilos overweight does not sound as bad as 50 lbs.

7. Defense will be easier if the offense has to drive 10 meters for a first down.

6. Arizona summers will not seem as bad when its only 40 degrees outside.

5. Its not “metric”, its “Digital”!

4. Imagine all the exciting math you will do converting your favorite recipes to milliliters.

3. Less fractions to deal with like, “Do I need a five eighths socket or a nine sixteenths to loosen this nut?”

2. The boy band 98° will not be as popular calling themselves 36.7°.

1. Half a liter is more than a pint, which means, MORE BEER FOR EVERYBODY!

Hearing the national anthem so much in the last few years got me to thinking. I have sung and heard it so many times but never really broken it down.

A bit of background first. Francis Scott Key wrote it on September 13, 1814 while he was stuck aboard a British ship. The Brits detained him whilst they shelled the tar out of Fort McHenry. Fort McHenry was defending Baltimore and Key was defending Dr. William Beanes. Beanes had been captured after the burning of Washington D.C. After the shelling, Keyes put pen to paper. As an added bonus, Dr. Beanes made it out OK.

The first stanza (there are four but we only sing the first) consists of four sentences three of which are questions.

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Question Number 1: Can you see the flag this morning?

Whose broad strips and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, o’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?

Question Number 2: Really, it was there last night. It was a striped flag with some stars on it that was madly flapping from the shock waves of bombs. Is it still there?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.

The only line not in question form.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Question Number 3: By far everyone’s favorite part.

Officially adopted as the national anthem by Congress in 1931, it is a poem about the flag of a fledgling nation sung to the tune of an English drinking song.

The flag Francis Scott Key saw and wrote about is on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
